Tuesday was the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Those living with disabilities face many challenges that prevent them from farming. But this is changing. 🌾⠀ ⠀ We're working with communities to encourage greater representation of persons living with disabilities in agriculture - the largest sector in rural Uganda. 📣 Non-disabled followers of mine, listen up please. 📣 I’m mad. I’m mad that on International Day of Disability, the only people I saw posting were disabled people. I’m mad that the ONE day a year we have that’s dedicated to us, you didn’t even lift a finger to try to raise our voices. I’m mad that you post about all kinds of social justice issues, but you haven’t made a peep about disability. I’m mad at how often I hear comments like “I’ve never even thought of that!” or “Thank you for educating me!” when you could take the time to research disability issues. I’m mad that I put an incredible amount of energy into talking about issues that effect me, only to hear an echo from other disabled folks and CRICKETS from you. I’m mad that I’m likely one of the only disabled folks you follow. I’m mad that I experience ableism every single day, and you let it happen. I’m mad because I’m wasting precious time, energy, and resources that are hard to come by with a disability on people who don’t give a damn. The thing is, at some point these issues will become your own, either because you or someone you love become disabled. Don’t wait until then to do something about it.

International Day of People with Disabilities/Disabled Peoples Day was December 3rd. There has been a lot of chat in the disability community about how the day (and Disability History Month in October) is overlooked by non-disabled people. . It's not unusual, exactly. Days recognizing a marginalized community are often ignored by other people (with the exception of events that have become coopted by capitalism). And for sure, IDPWD has some critiques in the disability community. . But it shouldn't be that way. Disability exists in every community, and anyone can become disabled at any time. Ableism effects everyone in the drive to produce and perform. It is in everyone's best interest to erase ableism and create a more accessible, welcoming world. . But that isn't the only reason non-disabled people should care. Disabled people deserve to recognized, celebrated, and cared for, for no other reason than we exist... just as all life deserves to be celebrated for existing. Yet that seldom happens. . If you are an abled person, and particularly if you have other marginalized identities, please think about how you recognize and care for disabled people. (I think it hurts the most to be ignored by other marginalized communities... like I expect it from white, wealthy, thin, straight cis people). Celebrate us and care about how ableism impacts our lives. We are all in this together. . (It took me like an hour to write this through thick brain fog, so please recognize the spirit of this post rather than nitpick details) . ID in alt text

#Repost@celestial_investments Sorry I’m late! Tuesday was #givingtuesday AND #internationaldayofpersonswithdisabilities. I’m told everyday that someone learns a lot from this even though I’m extremely busy, still without basic needs like transportation, or enough for a wheelchair. I would like to think one day soon we wont have to worry about these things, disability will be normalized, celebrated and accounted for instead of treated like a monster under the bed. Google social construct of disability, listen to @deathpanelpodcast, and buy the book health justice now by Tim Faust! We can make this less shitty and although I may make it seem cute- structurally things are obviously very messed up and dont have to be. I’m still grappling with the reality that I often am someone’s first experience of an outspoken disabled and chronically ill person. I’m just very lucky, and haven’t died yet (should have) my medical bills have exceeded 1.6 million I’m in incredible amounts of debt I will never pay back and cant afford basic medical treatment now. Many of us die very young, are dying, many end up destitute, many are put in homes out of sight out of mind neglected and abused. I’ve been told I need too much help to not live in a home too. We are 61 million the largest minority you just decide not to see us. I’d like to live in a world where ALL disabled people can live independently, use the sidewalks, don’t have to rely on the kindness of others to get by, beg for money for medical care, and are able to use all bathrooms/public transit/most buildings. For us accessible apartments, home modifications, medical treatment, accessible vehicles, long term caretakers, mobility devices are all considered luxuries and not what they are which is a necessity. We are not legally allowed to work without losing basic help with these things even still many go without food and homes even with these service as 730 of ssi isn’t enough to live off of. Disability is plenty hard enough without having so many barriers that make surviving at all very expensive and difficult. Why do we have austerity and means testing? If things changed structurally you’d see a lot more of us and

#Repost @design with @get_repost ・・・ On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we asked the accessibility advocate @thesineadburke to introduce us to 4 designers who are redefining accessibility. “Design is a vehicle to invite, welcome, include and inspire everyone,” Sinéad said. “It has the power to transform culture, society and the ways in which we behave, think and act." Among the designers she told us to follow is @alleles, a design studio that makes stylish prosthetic covers to help amputees express their creativity, individuality and confidence. Watch our story to learn about 3 others Sinéad recommends: @topandderby, who design colorful and elegant walking sticks; @keri.lam, who is making music-listening simple and tactile with a music player called MUSY; and @izzywheels, 2 sisters who create playful wheelchair covers. Vinod Kumar Sharma is one of an estimated 8 million blind people in India. He spends four hours a day navigating New Delhi’s crowded public transport system. In the megacity of 20 million people, Sharma depends on his white cane and fellow commuters to help him run the gauntlet of crowded trains and the congested, potholed and often pavement-less roads. The 44-year-old, who lost his sight as a teenager, undertakes the long commute to attend classes at the Blind Relief Association, where he is training as a massage therapist. India’s blind population accounts for 20 percent of the global total, according to the World Health Organization. Howdy Homemade Dallas, Texas. Tutupnya. Bagaimana? Menarik bukan? Siapa yang mau beli es krim angkat tangannya 🤟 Selamat berakhir pekan gaes. Selamat menikmati weekend bersama keluarga. Salam inklusi! ___________________ #howdyhomemade #disabilityawareness #inclusiveness #banjarbilitas #salaminklusi #internationaldayofpersonswithdisabilities #instagram

This post is dedicated to International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which took place on December 3. This day (and everyday) is special to inourish because of the connection we have to our family and friends with disabilities ♥️. - A disability does not define a person, all people have some health impairment or "disability" at one point in their life. Some of us need assistance such as wheelchairs or glasses to read/improve our vision or medication to manage pain or other diseases, some of us need seeing-eye dogs, the list can go on. The theme of this years #2019IDPWD is "The Future is Accessible." The theme is motivation for us to look towards the future where we can play a role in helping others overcome the challenges and barriers that (physically, emotionally, socially, culturally) stand in the way. We can create a future where individuals with disabilities are not excluded just because of their "impairments." With that being said, the Special Olympics is an organization that we think stands by this message. We have been involved for many years, volunteering in different sports and events that involve the Special Olympics athletes/participants. Outside of the Special Olympics, we have had the opportunity to teach classes about the importance of nutrition and physical activity to improve health outcomes of these individuals. - ➡️ There are many ways to get involved in this community. One way, is to visit your local Special Olympics organization and inquire on how you can volunteer. Other great organizations worth mentioning are Goodwill, Best Buddies, and your local Adult Training Facility. . . . . . #accessibilityforall #internationaldayofpersonswithdisabilities #2019idpwd #unitednations #conventionontherightsofpersonswithdisabilities #specialolympicsmiamidade #cityofdoral #specialolympics2019 #disabilities #disabilitiesawareness #nutritionandhealth #physicalactivityandhealth #miamidietitians #dietitiansofinstagram #dietitianapproved #registereddietitianapproved #registereddietitians

Illustration by @cantgoout_imsick ⁣ ⁣ Being chronically ill and disabled is really tiring and can just feel like A LOT sometimes. ⁣ ⁣ It’s hard having to deal with the day to day aspects of trying to function as a human being when I’m sick and in pain, and then on top of that I have to deal with the responsibility of advocating for myself all the time. I have to be my own advocate with doctors and other health care providers, with insurance companies and the government, with local businesses in an attempt to understand if I can access places and do things that other people so easily can. ⁣ ⁣ I’ve been feeling really burnt out by all of the advocating lately, especially the advocating I’ve been doing around the topic of accessibility and trying to make my social media circle and my city more accessible.⁣ ⁣ You may think that if I’m tired by it all I can just stop doing it. But I don’t feel that I can. I have a very strong belief that myself and other disabled people deserve the same level of access across the board as our non-disabled friends. I should be able to go to that concert, eat at that restaurant, travel to that place, etc etc. Everything YOU can do, I should be allowed the opportunity to do. And if myself and other sick and disabled people stop advocating for our access rights, most people will just go back to thinking it doesn’t matter and they don’t have to do anything to change or improve things. ⁣ ⁣ It’s very selfish sometimes. But I just want to be included. I want to be able to do fun things and not feel like I’m being left out all the time. I don’t enjoy stacking up the list of things I can’t do and seeing how much higher it is than the list of things I can do. ⁣ ⁣ But it’s really exhausting. So often it feels like it’s just us chronically tired and disabled people who care and who are willing to raise our voices demanding change. It’s honestly very disheartening to see how small the ripples are and how few non-disabled people step up to advocate for us and with us. ⁣ ⁣ CONTINUED IN COMMENTS

At the commemoration of the 2019 United Nations International Day of Persons’ with Disabilities on Tuesday, I had the opportunity of speaking at Unilever Nigeria Plc @unileverghng in the morning and at Standard Chartered Bank @stanchartng later that day. Both events were held in partnership with @theseabilitiesfoundation As an autism mom, It gives me so much joy to be able to inspire others by sharing my son’s story. Living with a disability is not a crime (even though the unenlightened behave as if it is!🤨) and it’s certainly not the end of the world. There’s so much that you can accomplish with the right attitude and commitment to ensure that your loved one living with a disability is able to maximize his/her potential and contribute their quota towards the the development of our nation instead of being a burden on society. #internationaldayofpersonswithdisabilities #theseabilitiesfoundation #standardchartered #unilever #disabilityawareness

This year, GroupM UK's disability employee resource group, EnableM, joined the #PurpleLightUp campaign, to recognise the contribution of disabled people to our economy, work and society. We asked everyone to wear an item of purple clothing and to bake cakes for our bake off sale - with all proceeds going to @scopecharity We also hosted a panel discussion, with GroupM Digital Managing Director Paul Rowlinson asking people with hidden disabilities from across GroupM about their experience of working life. Thanks to Sandra Arnold, Jo Davey, Kitty Day and Amy Walker for speaking about their conditions and some of the adjustments made at work for them, enabling them to thrive and do their best work. @cantgoout_imsick ⬇️⬇️ . Respect the boundaries of disabled people!! This illustration is to remind people of the street harassment disabled people experience daily. I made it for Dr. Amy Kavanagh aka @blondehistorian and Hannah Mason-Bish for their takeover of @ourstreetsnow for international day of disability. Which is today! If you are able and it isn’t triggering for you I would recommend watching later today. . . Be sure to ask someone with a mobility aid if they want your help before going to do so anyways. You wouldn’t touch someone’s body without consent so don’t touch their aid. A common theme that Amy and Hannah speak about is the hostility disabled people face when they tell someone they don’t want or need their help. Comments such as ‘ungrateful bitch.’ . . When someone thinks they are doing something ‘noble’ they can often get defensive and at worst abusive when they are told their ‘kindness’ is not warranted. Before you go and help anyone you should always be mindful that you might be met with someone who doesn’t want your help and that’s THEIR CHOICE and you must politely accept that. It’s not for the person you aim to help to put up with discomfort just to satisfy your desire to be of service. Your actions are not kind or helpful if your help is not wanted. . . Image description: a woman with light skin and a purple jumper is in a wheelchair. A man with a grey top and blue jeans is touching the handle. Over his hand is a stop sign. The background is pink and there is dark blue writing that says ‘ do not touch my aid without consent’ #internationaldayofpersonswithdisabilities #idpd
