Test, don't guess. Here's why. . I recently talked to a client who was rechecking some labs. . On this most recent lab work his cholesterol, triglycerides & LDL's had all gone up considerably. Not great news for anyone, but especially him. . He recently had a stint put in and has a long history of really high cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL's. . Long story short, this prompted dramatic diet & lifestyle changes which include a plant based diet. . Here's where it got REAL interesting. He had been consuming an avocado a day, along with a healthy amount of walnuts and olive oil as healthy sources of fats. . Over time, his lipid panel became NORMAL, for the first time in his adult life. I believe due in large part to a complete lifestyle change and lots of healthy fats in his diet. . More recently he decided to follow Dr. Ornish's heart diet advice for those with extreme cardiovascular disease. This diet is mostly plant based (healthy) but it's also VERY LOW in healthy fats. [Healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, walnuts, salmon & sardines]. . The interesting part is that this low fat, high veggie diet has caused his cholesterol, triglycerides & LDL's to go back up. . How? Healthy fats don't make us fat. They actually decrease inflammation and promote fat metabolism. Think "fat burning mode." . This is exactly what you want if you have high cholesterol and a family history of heart disease. . I find this across the board in all my clients. The more healthy fats consumed along with a healthy anti-inflammatory diet, the better inflammatory & lipid markers get. . Don't be afraid of healthy fats and when in doubt...test, don't guess.

If you know me, you know I hate any and every form of cardio but that I’m also a big believer in finding what works for YOU. Nature is an easy way to connect to the present moment and to take in the beauty and the fresh air. The view is always worth the quad burn!! And I’m lucky to live in an area that has thousands of breathtaking trails. . . Hate it or love it.. the fact is that cardio is essential for optimal health. The benefits include: improves your cardiovascular health, lowers blood pressure, aids sleep, reduces pain, boosts mood, regulates weight, strengthens the immune system, improves your brain power. . . ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 🍒 Three cups deeply colored vegetables and fruits, such as berries, tomatoes, beets, carrots, and winter squash. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 🍈Three cups of sulfur-rich vegetables including broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, asparagus, Brussel sprouts, turnips, radishes, onions, and garlic. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ When you think about it 1 cup of veggies is not that much, so eating those 9 cups (to have the most nourishing diet for your cells), spread out over those three meals a day or with snacks, can be done. This week on The People’s Scientist podcast, I cover some of the latest science pertaining to estrogen and progesterone. Receptors for estrogen and progesterone are present throughout the brain in BOTH females and males. In the last 10-15 years, a great amount of experimental evidence supports that estrogen protects the brain following an acute injury such as a stroke or concussion. Evidence suggests that estrogen has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, can reduce excitotoxicity, can induce neuroplasticity, and can enhance neuron and dendrite regeneration in the brain. Wrap pizzas. These are my go-to lunch for the kids when I’m short on time and energy, and there are literally fights over these. Usually we just go vegetarian on them and use whatever single veges I’ve got floating around like mushrooms, courgette, capsicums, spinach. Miss 3 wanted to try the “bug” ones made with cricket flour and they were great. I make the sauce with tomato paste, a pinch each of brown sugar and oregano and a drizzle of olive oil. Then obviously, cheese, and bake at 200 until brown and crispy. I love cooking with my kids, giving them that one on one time and encouraging them to try different foods.
