This weekend, there are a lot of classes to fill your schedule! There is no meditation class on Friday. If you are interested, @torkomji is hosting a sound bath in the space on Friday night. He is incredible. There are two events I am hosting with @plantsandoilz in Santa Monica on Saturday and Sunday. 'How do I know whether I still have parasites or not?' Is a question I answered on @bayfm99.9 this morning. . It turns out that 95% of the world have parasites. . And don’t even realise - whether you’ve travelled to a third world country or not. Why don’t we know? Because they can show NO signs and symptoms. . When most people think of parasites, they think of the wiggly intestinal worms like tapeworm and threadworms, which can be seen with the naked eye. . However, there are many microscopic parasites that also exist, not just in the gut but virtually anywhere in the body. This is because parasites can be found in not just our stools, but also blood, saliva and tissue. . We’re exposed to parasites constantly, from eating uncooked meat or fish, not washing our fruit and veggies properly, to walking barefoot or sleeping in a bed with our beloved pet that’s potentially carrying something. . What is GUT DYSBIOSIS I hear you ask? Good question! . Dysbiosis meaning - “an imbalance between the types of organisms present in a person's natural microflora, especially that of the gut, thought to contribute to a range of conditions of ill health”. Oxford Dictionary. . Put simply, our gut bugs include bad bacteria and they can overgrow in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) in the large intestine, and they can move into the small intestine (SIBO) where we really don’t want them to be. They can also wreak havoc in the stomach (hello helicobactor pylori)! . When this happens we don’t have enough of the good guys to balance them out. And it’s here that our body reaches a state called dysbiosis. . They produce all kinds of irritable and horrible gut symptoms. . Bloating. Pain. Reflux. Nausea. Constipation. Diarrhrea. Or both! . They make you feel uncomfortable or worse hold you hostage in your home as you try to get out the door in the morning - wanting never to be far from a toilet...just in case! . But they don’t stop their trail of destruction there. They can lead to systemic, chronic health conditions and disease like allergies and autoimmune conditions. They can have quite the impact on our energy, weight, immune system and mental health over time. . We want them in the right balance but overuse of antibiotics, other medications like antacids, alcohol, lack of fibre, water and generally eating a crappy diet high in processed foods can all disrupt the balance and leave us susceptible to dysbiosis and pathogenic infections - queue parasites! And don't they all just love the sugar!! They’ll be having a nice little party in there at your expense. . The moral of story is that we want plenty of the good guys to keep our bad guys in check and our gut functioning well BUT throwing down probiotics is not necessarily the first step when you have dysbiosis - depends what’s going on. . There are functional tests available that look for all these things and I work with these kinds of tests all the time in clinic to pinpoint what's going on in order to get to the root cause of your symptoms. Yup. Probably eventually. 😱 . I was at a conference where a doctor asked me to review a woman’s DUTCH test. Her cortisol was quite high and her hormones were not good. The doctor said the patient had a number of hormonal complaints, couldn’t lose weight, couldn’t sleep, felt anxious, was tired...etc. 😕 . I pointed to the high cortisol. “How’s her stress?” I asked. 🧐 . “She’s very stressed. Everyone is stressed. Who cares. What should I do about her hormones?” The doctor replied. 👀 . Y’all. I gave that doc an earful. Who cares? I care. She cares. Her hormones care. Her sleep quality cares. Her fat cells care. Her long term risks for diabetes, heart disease, cancer and autoimmune care. 😤 . Let me be extra clear so those in the back can hear me: there is NO award for being THE MOST busy or stressed person in the room. There are no bonus points for a long to-do list. 😩 . Especially if it’s affecting your health, your job, your happiness and your relationships. 😢 . I know you can’t stop. I get that 100%! You’re talking to someone who flew to Kentucky, lectured and flew home in less than 24hrs only to give two more lectures the next day in Portland. 🤪 . But you can set boundaries. You can use your “no button” on things that don’t light you up. You can rest, rejuvenate, have a calm moment before going back at it. 🙂 . CAN WHAT YOU EAT REALLY AFFECT YOUR THYROID? . If you put soda or leaded fuel into your car's unleaded fuel tank, how well do you think it will run? . Our body also needs the correct fuel to run optimally, and like mentioned in my previous post, "Gluten and Dairy Are Not Friends With Your Thyroid", there are many other "foods" that are not conducive to thyroid healing and optimal health. . I say, "foods", because most packaged and man-made foods are not real fuel for the body, and cause inflammation which leads to disease. . A good question to ask yourself is, "will this nourish my body?", and if not, it is best to avoid if you are prioritising healing or want optimal health. . So what diet should you follow to heal your thyroid or an autoimmune condition? . A good place to start is an elimination diet, and which one you should follow would depend on which symptoms you are presenting with. Two that I recommend often is the AIP (autoimmune protocol) or the Bi-phasic diet. . The reason an elimination diet is so beneficial is it allows the gut to heal, and gut issues are common in 99.9% of thyroid and autoimmune cases. (well, tbh, almost all health conditions I see in clinic) . By eliminating gluten, dairy, sugar, grains, alcohol and packaged foods and you will see a dramatic improvement in your health and symptoms. . I’m busy, I have a lot going on, I can’t stop - is this going to negatively affect my health? 🤷🏼‍♀️ . Yup. Probably eventually. 😱 . I was at a conference where a doctor asked me to review a woman’s DUTCH test. Her cortisol was quite high and her hormones were not good. The doctor said the patient had a number of hormonal complaints, couldn’t lose weight, couldn’t sleep, felt anxious, was tired...etc. 😕 . I pointed to the high cortisol. “How’s her stress?” I asked. 🧐 . “She’s very stressed. Everyone is stressed. Who cares. What should I do about her hormones?” The doctor replied. 👀 . Y’all. I gave that doc an earful. Who cares? I care. She cares. Her hormones care. Her sleep quality cares. Her fat cells care. Her long term risks for diabetes, heart disease, cancer and autoimmune care. 😤 . Let me be extra clear so those in the back can hear me: there is NO award for being THE MOST busy or stressed person in the room. There are no bonus points for a long to-do list. 😩 . Especially if it’s affecting your health, your job, your happiness and your relationships. 😢 . I know you can’t stop. I get that 100%! You’re talking to someone who flew to Kentucky, lectured and flew home in less than 24hrs only to give two more lectures the next day in Portland. 🤪 . But you can set boundaries. You can use your “no button” on things that don’t light you up. You can rest, rejuvenate, have a calm moment before going back at it. 🙂 . And you can lean on your friends, family and community for help when you need it. 🥰 . Just say no and hit pause more often. Your body will actually reward that! 🙌🏼 . It’s mulberry season again! Ivy and I have been picking buckets of them over the holidays. Rhun has been enjoying picking them all by himself. Everyone talks about how messy they make you and how tasty they are but they have SO many health benefits too. Super rich in resveratrol- the antioxidant that keeps so many illnesses away. A couple of thoughts: 👻 Don't beat yourself up if you make "bad" food choices. It is your choice and you should own it, enjoy it, and release it when you're done. No need to let that shit weigh you down (literally and figuratively). 👻 Plan ahead. I will make sure I have something "safe" to eat, especially if I'm not feeling well (achy joints, fatigue, constipation, etc from #hashimotos). Last week was all about naturopathic medicine but I couldn’t forget about my first love: acupuncture! For me, acupuncture was my “gateway drug” into natural medicine. I was ten years old when I had my first acupuncture treatment that I remember (funny story - only a few months ago my mom told me that I actually received acupuncture when I was 2 yrs old 😂). It was a magical experience for me and started my journey down the path of medicine. The science behind acupuncture is still evolving BUT we do know that acupuncture points have a different electrical conductance than the surrounding skin. Ever have a sleepless night, a busy schedule with reduced rest or a big night out & woken up to cravings for dense, rich meals? ~ ‘Blame it on your nose -- or olfactory system -- which is affected in two ways by sleep deprivation, according to the study ‘why we crave junk food after a sleepless night’. First, it goes into hyperdrive, sharpening the food odors for the brain so it can better differentiate between food and non-food odors. But then there is a breakdown in the communication with other brain areas that receive food signals. And with that, decisions about what to eat change. "When you're sleep deprived, these brain areas may not be getting enough information, and you're overcompensating by choosing food with a richer energy signal," said senior author Thorsten Kahnt, assistant professor of neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “But it may also be that these other areas fail to keep tabs on the sharpened signals in the olfactory cortex. Pumpkin Pie Overnight Oats 🎃 . Just in case you haven’t had enough pumpkin...now you can have it for breakfast 😋 . Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a female hormonal condition that I see a fair bit of in clinic. Does that make me an expert*? Heck no but it does make me want to learn more and more about how it affects females on a day to day basis and how it potentially can affect their fertility and how metabolically it affects them now and in the future. * be weary of anybody who is a self proclaimed expert, any twit can call themselves that 🤓 During that initial client consult we chat about how and when a PCOS diagnosis came about (hint, cysty looking ovaries on an ultrasound is not enough to give a solid diagnosis). We talk about signs and symptoms and one symptom that often gets mentioned is pain. Period pain, mid cycle pain, lower abdominal pain, back pain and pain down the thighs 🤔 Hirsutism Cystic acne on jaw/neck Irregular or non-existent periods Insulin resistance (signs or lab tests) Elevated androgens (signs or lab tests) Those with PCOS may experience some or all of these, as they are collectively common PCOS symptoms. But not pain...because pain is not a symptom of PCOS. If there is pain then something else is going on. If you are told that pain is due to your PCOS, this is incorrect. Most often pain is due to inflammatory conditions (endometriosis is often the culprit and it is entirely possible to have both conditions going on). This wasn't always so clear to me, but life has drilled within me this realization slowly over the past few years. . Spirituality is not a panacea. It is not a salve for all our wounds. Sound spirituality is naught but a Way that guides us to connect to our deepest hearts and, ultimately, to God. And though the process is not airy-fairy, rainbows and unicorns, all the time- you will for sure be tested with good days and bad days- you should be able to differentiate between the entering into a stage of contraction on the Path (an inevitable and fruitful stage) from being on a pseudo-path of self-harm and emotional self-sabotage masquerading as guidance. . Different spiritual paths may take different approaches to this, and some are for sure better than others; some better than others for different people, and some better than others for different epochs of time- no doubt modern people differ from the ancients and have unique needs. . But when a teacher is not adept at reading the needs of the student, or is practicing a type of dry and rote pedagogy, and the student is encouraged to practice a generic type of spirituality that is more suppressive than supportive, what emerges from the seeker is more of the individual's shadow/nafsani material than the Heart's light and perspicacity. This is how abuse, gaslighting and grooming happens. This is how spirituality can end up destroying someone's faith and/or sanity. . You should know this very well. . And you should know that we are all wounded. And I believe we could all benefit from the parallel work of mending and integration in conjunction with the spiritual work of purification and awakening. But one thing is for sure and I believe this fully; for moderns, the latter without the former is utterly disastrous.

LET FOOD BY THE MEDICINE 🥘 . . . This famous quote is often attributed to #hippocrates. 📌Hippocrates considered nutrition one of the main tools that a doctor can use. He also said about 2500 years ago "Leave your drugs in the chemist pot if you can heal the patient with food" . . . 📌The main reason we choose a particular food is because we like the way it tastes. We don't eat blueberries because they are an excellent source of antioxidants- we eat them because they taste good. . . . 📌Learning to enjoy " the taste of eating right" takes time and perseverance. I believe that eating fresh fruit, vegetables, grains, nuts, and super nutritious food such as sprouts and wheatgrass the body is able to restore its internal balance - and it's capacity to maintain a healthy weight, right disease and heal itself.
