An SSL certificate is a digital certificate that provides authentication for a website and enables an encrypted connects. Basically it makes the connection to your site more secure specially if you receive online payments. You will know if your site is secure by a little padlock icon in the top left of your browser. If you don't have that don't worry, you can contact your hosting company and they should be able to help.
