Besides being incredibly aesthetically pleasing and delicious, pineapples have to be one of my must-haves in the fruit bowl, reason being, they hold many beautiful benefits.
My favourite would be the fact that they contain something called bromelain, which is a natural digestive enzyme 🥰 This particular group of enzymes is known as proteases which help break down proteins into its building blocks, which includes amino acids. Kinda cool, right? 🤓
I’m no stranger to a sore, uncomfortable tum (aka horrendous gut health) so I have made it my summer routine on those mornings when I wake up feeling “bleh” and have no appetite, feel bloated and “heavy”, to grab out my juicer and juice some fresh pineapple, 1 (or half) a green apple (generally they have less sugar than red ones), a big chunk of ginger, piece of fresh turmeric, 3 stalks of celery, 1 lemon and 2 huge handfuls of spinach. I know, I know, it might sound a little grim and sour 😝 but I promise you it tastes SO nice and refreshing!! I find this to be a gentle way to wake up your body on those not-so-happy mornings. The warmth from the ginger and acidity from the lemon also fires up your digestion further!
From doing this, I weirdly found my IBS symptoms alleviated strangely. There’s no science backing that one though haha, just a weird benefit I noticed 😂
Final note, juicing does often get a bad wrap due to the high levels of sugar and lack of fibre which is why this is predominantly vegetable.
This also isn’t a sufficient breakfast. I like to incorporate this into a morning routine as an act of self-care, but I always follow up with a wholesome breakfast which includes a protein and fat source to support blood glucose regulation and satiety. Enjoy! 🥰
