When a child's body secretes melatonin, it binds to a few receptor sites in the brain and the body. Two of these receptor sites are referred to as M1 and M2. Melatonin binds to these receptors, and through this binding, melatonin receptors mediate neuroendocrine responses. . . It is believed that two of these neuroendocrine responses include: phase shifting, which appears to be regulated by the MT2 receptor and sleep onset, which appears to be regulated by the MT1 receptor. . . This means that trouble falling asleep (sleep onset) and not falling asleep at normal times (phase shifting) may be due to the disruption of melatonin release and melatonin levels affecting the binding of Melatonin with these receptor sites. . . This is why bedtiming is so crucial to your child's healthy sleep patterns and restorative sleep overall. . . Can you remember a time when your child's sleep got wacky after an unusually late bedtime? If you think your little one could benefit from some extra tlc at the moment then read below!⠀ ⠀ 🌸Allow time to talk about your child or toddlers day, if they don't want to talk, you can tell them about your day! No detail is too small and it will encourage your little one to speak about there day. You can also ask them specific questions ie "who did you play with today?", "what snack did you have?" etc. ⠀ ⠀ 🌸Make time for extra cuddles and kisses, we get busy and sometimes it's easy to forget but cuddles and kisses are so important no matter how old our kids are! It shows we care and are there for them. ⠀ ⠀ 🌸 Spend some special time together away from phones and distractions, make it all about them and set a timer so they know when the time is up, this time becomes very special and is ideal whenever you feel your child needs that extra time with you.⠀ ⠀ 🌸Children mimic our moods and feelings. If we want to help our kids with their emotional wellness, it really does start with us and how we behave around them. Circadian Rhythm, what is it❔❓ - Circadian Rhythm is the cycle your body goes through over a 24 hour period. 🧭 This cycle is made up of many different parts such as hormone regulation, body temperature 🌡regulation, and your sleep/wake cycle. 🥱 - If you ever realize that you get sleepy or you feel energized at the same times during the day, this rhythm is part of why! 🥴🏃🏻 - Just like anything, experiences in our every day lives, both that we can and cannot control, mess with this schedule over time. 😤Stress, shift work, inactivity, jet lag, alcohol, staying up too late, getting up too early, and much more! 😖 - We can’t control all of these things, 🤷🏻‍♀️but we can do a few things to improve our sleep from night to night. - Steps for better sleep: ☑️go to bed at the same time 🕙 every night to regulate your circadian rhythm ☑️elevate your heart rate once a day for 30 minutes!❤️ ☑️turn off your tv/phone an hour or more before bed 📱 ☑️get regular massages! 𝟱 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝗽𝘀 𝗳ü𝗿 𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗹𝗮𝗳 😴⁣ Ein ausgewogener und guter Schlaf ist nicht nur wichtig für deine Gesundheit! Auch in Sachen Muskelaufbau und Fettabbau ist der Schlaf mindestens genauso wichtig wie die Ernährung und das Training. Um deinem Körper und Gehirn ausreichend Erholung zu ermöglichen, solltest du zwischen 7 und 9 Stunden Schlaf anpeilen. Damit es mit dem ungestörten, erholsamen Schlaf auch klappt, haben wir dir hier 5 Tipps zusammengestellt:⁣ ▶ Sorge für eine dunkle, stille Umgebung in deinem Schlafzimmer.⁣ ▶ Halte die Zimmertemperatur bei etwa. 19 Grad.⁣ ▶ Lege 1 Stunde vor dem Schlafen das Handy weg und schaue auch kein Fernsehen mehr, um v.a. den Einfluss von blauem Licht vor dem Schlafen zu vermeiden. Blaues Licht stört nämlich u.a. die Produktion unseres Schlafhormons Melatonin!⁣ ▶ Esse bis max. 2 Stunden vor dem Schlafen gehen deine letzte Mahlzeit. Breaks my freakin’ heart when parents call me to sleep train their little 4th trimester aged babies. They are not born with a circadian rhythm (the ability to produce melatonin on a timed basis). This isn’t fully mature (for night sleep) until 16 weeks (from the due date, not the birth date). Sleep is supposed to be light, active, sporadic and disorganized -so that baby can easily resuscitate, should their fragile physical vitals fall below normal. This is also a critical time in establishing positive breastfeeding behaviors and secure attachment. (The foundation of trust from which we teach, later on). ⁣ 🌙 There’s a reason it’s called a beauty sleep! While we load our skin with cosmetics and detoxes, we often overlook one basic rule of thumb to keep it supple, glowing and rejuvenated – uninterrupted sleep every night!⁣ ⁣ 🌙 When you sleep soundly for 7-8 hours every night, magic happens. Your skin cells get a makeover, with the process of mitosis occurring naturally - regenerating, repairing and renewing damaged cells. This collagen-boosting, anti-ageing process is said to be at its peak from about 11 pm to midnight, keeping the skin supple and wrinkle-free.⁣ ⁣ 🌙 When you sleep well at night, your stress or cortisol hormone levels (which tend to spike during the day) automatically come down, keeping your skin looking fresh, without breakouts, acne and inflammation that stress causes.⁣ ⁣ 🌙 When you don’t get enough sleep at night, your skin is undernourished from the inside, and sorely lacking in nutrients. 2️⃣ Newborns don’t need a schedule! I know during all those sleepless nights and naps that require full assistance and attention from you. You feel touched out and yearn for the days when you might get a break with an independent nap or two. You worry you will never be able to get them to sleep without feeding and rocking. But the truth is for the first five months EVERYTHING is on demand. And that’s how it’s supposed to be! Don’t stress yourself out with the worry of creating bad habits. The goal of this period is to help this new human adjust to life on the outside and learn to feel safe and secure in order to invite independent sleep into their life. Focus on wake windows and tired cues and really learning YOUR baby and what their needs around sleep are. By doing this you are working to develop trust and a secure bond and this is going to help you more with any future sleep work than any sort of schedule or “putting down drowsy but awake” will. Survival is enough! And sleep is important, so whatever you need to do to support and develop it is fair game in these early months. Sometimes you just need a lazy Sunday to recover from the week 😴 Did you know that cats sleep an average of 15 hours a day with some cats sleeping up to 20? With only a few species sleeping more! 🙋🏽Have you ever spent hours trying to achieve a nap? Or maybe hours resettling you baby to achieve that “perfect nap”?⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ 💯There’s only 1 bad sleep association & it comes from trying to force sleep.⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ I remember spending hours around the 4 month mark trying to achieve naps. I was crying, frustrated & those emotions were creating a bad sleep association for my little one with sleep in general.⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ ✔️You can create the perfect environment for sleep but you CANNOT force sleep. ⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ ➡️Sleep happens when our homeostatic sleep drive builds up enough sleep pressure for us to fall asleep & stay asleep. ⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ ❌So sitting in a dark room for an hour, stressing out & trying to force a nap when your child is literally just not tired enough to fall asleep is a pointless battle that creates a bad relationship with sleep.⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ Take a break if the naps not happening. A good rule of thumb is 10-15 minutes.⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ If after 10-15 minutes the nap isn’t happening, I take a break. Make a tea and give your little one a change of scenery. Put on some relaxing music & of course avoid stimulation. Maybe they just need a little more awake time & you can make a note of that for the following day. Watch for signs that they are ready for sleep & give it another go. ⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ ➡️If the build up of sleep pressure is not relieved with a nap, our bodies will release cortisol & we become overtired, often resulting in a “second wind” or burst of energy. ⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ Maybe that “magical sleep window” was missed and baby is now over tired and needs some extra assistance falling asleep & staying asleep. Try going for a walk with the stroller or going for a car ride to get out of the house, both will likely result in an assisted nap which is perfect for an overtired babe. ⁠ ⁣⁠ ✔️Again, you CANNOT force sleep. Sleep should come from a place of relaxation & comfort not a place of stress & tears.⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ Do you ever find yourself obsessing over naps? WHY DO WE DREAM Dreams are the stories the brain tells during sleep—they’re a collection of clips, images, feelings, and memories that involuntarily occur during the REM (rapid eye movement) stage of slumber. Humans typically have multiple dreams per night that grow longer as sleep draws to a close. It’s hypothesised that everyone dreams, but a small subsection of the population reports that they never remember experiencing dreams. Recent research suggests that they dreams may help us process intense emotions, sort through and consolidate memories, make sense of random neuron activity, or rehearse responses to threatening situations. Others argue that dreams have no evolutionary function, but simply dramatise personal concerns. With neuroimaging techniques and better technology, dreams have become a focus of scientific research, from efforts to record dreams to studies investigating how lucid dreaming might be beneficial to mental health. It will be interesting to uncover the purpose and benefits of dreams over the next few years.
